Toyota and Subaru Collaborate on New Electric Vehicle

By Kevin Joseph October 07, 2024

Toyota and Subaru are teaming up to create a new electric SUV model, expanding their electric vehicle (EV) lineup.

This upcoming electric SUV will build on the foundation set by the bZ4X and Solterra EVs.

Production for this new electric SUV is scheduled to start in January 2026.

Unlike the bZ4X and Solterra, this new model will be produced at Subaru's Yajima factory, enhancing manufacturing efficiency.

To lower costs and accelerate development, the new SUV will incorporate components from existing electric models.

The targeted production goal for this electric SUV is between 15,000 and 20,000 units each month.

Key markets for this new EV include North America, Europe, and Japan, with potential for expansion into other regions.

There is currently no information on whether this new model will be priced lower than its predecessors, the bZ4X and Solterra.

As of September this year, Toyota sold 13,577 bZ4Xs in the U.S., showcasing strong demand for their electric vehicle offerings.

In contrast, Subaru's Solterra recorded lower sales with 9,137 units sold during the same timeframe.

Competitors like Hyundai's Ioniq 5 and Kia's EV6 have achieved higher sales figures, emphasizing the competitive EV market.

The Honda Prologue has also surpassed the bZ4X and Solterra in sales, indicating strong competition in the electric SUV segment.

Looking ahead, Toyota and Subaru are planning to introduce three additional electric vehicles beyond the bZ4X and Solterra, all of which will be crossover models.

Official announcements regarding the new electric SUV are expected in the second half of next year, generating anticipation among EV enthusiasts.

Despite focusing on electric models, Toyota and Subaru continue to develop internal combustion engines (ICEs) to meet diverse consumer needs.

A recent joint conference, featuring Mazda, showcased advancements in ICE technology, highlighting ongoing innovation in the automotive industry.

This new electric vehicle initiative aligns with global zero-emission goals, reflecting a commitment to sustainability.

The collaboration between Toyota and Subaru underscores their dedication to providing-

eco-friendly mobility solutions while enhancing their electric vehicle presence.
