The Recall Overview - Picture yourself behind the wheel of a stylish Hyundai Nexo, and suddenly you spot a curious white fog following your ride.
This isn't quite like the exciting escape scenes you see in spy movies; it's a different kind of experience altogether.
Instead, it indicates a technical issue at the core of the Nexo. Hyundai is recalling 1,545 Nexos from the-
2019 to 2024 model years because of a malfunction in an important safety device.
Although the number may appear small, it holds great importance considering Hyundai's specialized market for this hydrogen fuel-cell SUV in the United States.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has shared that this recall impacts almost-
all Nexo vehicles on American roads, with only around 1 percent of those recalled likely to have the defect.
Understanding the Technical Glitch - The issue arises from the Thermally-activated Pressure Relief Device-
(TPRD), which is a crucial part meant to safely handle hydrogen gas pressure.
This device helps keep things safe by venting hydrogen gas if the tanks get too hot. It looks like there's a little issue that has come up with the TPRD's glass bulb.
Micro-cracks might lead to the bulb breaking earlier than expected, allowing hydrogen gas to escape during regular-
use rather than at the intended temperature limit. The implications are quite significant.
When hydrogen gas is released near an ignition source, it increases the chances of a fire occurring. Drivers might see a white cloud coming from the back of the-
vehicle, along with a unique wind-like sound, a fuel gauge that’s dropping quickly, and a warning light lighting up on the gauge cluster.
Hyundai's Response and Next Steps - Hyundai is taking decisive action by replacing the glass bulb with a more reliable metal TPRD.
This new component has been installed in Nexos since May 21, 2024. While owners can continue driving their Nexos, Hyundai-
advises caution, recommending parking away from buildings and structures until the replacement is complete.
Affected Nexo owners will receive official notifications via mail starting December 10, and Hyundai will provide the fix free of charge.
